(Past Review) The Eye (Gin gwai) - Pang Brothers

What a ride? I'm still shaking from some of the images. This film is a very creepy reminder of what we take for granted as well as what we never truly see in our environment, there are spirits who consistently make attempts to contact and inquire about their lives, yet we are too preoccupied and silly to even take notice. Although this film is similar to Ringu in many respects (more cinematography than style I would argue) and the myth behind a certain female character is not a rip-off as much a substantial part of Chinese culture and mythology (and Ringu was Japanese as we all know, right?). Fortunately, the plot comes full circle and the images we are faced with in this film can be heartbreaking at times, unsettling in others -- the images of beauty are definitely taken for granted in this regard. The 'horror' element is well balanced with the drama in the film, and both merge together beautifully and perfectly. We are indeed given a glimpse of how different Chinese culture is to 'Western' standards, yet one is also reminded of the similarities we have in dealing with death, and this movie will surely give The Sixth Sense a run for its money.
